Tinos

Tinos is probably the most popular destination for christening. Panagia Tinos, one of the most important religious centers, gathers a number of faithful who wish to baptize their child in the temple, which symbolism and substance attach unique importance.

Regardless of whether the Baptism in Tinos takes place in the Church of Our Lady or one of the hundreds of picturesque churches of the villages and Chora, the devotion and spirituality that characterizes the island characterizes the fulfillment of the mystery of baptism.

Tinos is one of the few islands that offer a very large number of choices for Orthodox or Catholic baptism, while baptisms of Panaghia Tinos are also possible for adult baptism.

    1. Hi Marie,

thank you for reaching out to us and I agree with you, that Tinos is a beautiful place to baptize your child.

I have have strong personal connection to the island. My brother and I were baptized in Panagia Megalohari. And as a child my Grandmother and I visited Tinos every year. We made the procession from the harbor to the church. Once inside the church we would light a candle (in Greek we call this big candle ‘lampada’), to give thanks to my healthy birth.

The baptism in Panagia Megalohari itself is conducted in the old chapel under the church. The chapel is relatively small, but it has an amazing spiritual and serene atmosphere.

In Panagia Megalohari it is only possible to have an orthodox baptisms. If you would want a catholic baptism, you could chose one of the catholic churches on the island.

For you to be able to baptize your child in Panagia Megalohari, you do need to have Godparents who belong to the Orthodox Church. Please refer to my page ‘Orthodox Baptism from another Religion‘ to find out which documents you need.

Because of the reputation that miracles happen in this church, they offer walk in baptisms. Thus you can actually just go there, with all the necessary documents in hand and wait in line to baptize your child.

On the other hand, if you want to have a definitive date, to better organize this special event, you can call the church at (0030) 2283022336.

For any further information don’t hesitate and contact me.
