Rhodes

In Rhodes they used to baptizing the babies when they were about fifteen days old and sometimes when they were two or three months. On Wednesday before the baptism, the grandmothers invited the relatives and friends of the family, giving them bread. The Filema (offer of the bread) on the day of baptism was the Melekouni, a kind of pasteli spiced with cumin and cinnamon.

It belongs to the special category of “crunchy pasteliwn”, i.e. in its composition, sesame seeds (60% sesame and 40% honey).

Three days after baptism, at the house of the baptized, a feast was made only for women, where the godfather took the oil out of the baby. During the “breakout” the godfather put an egg in the water, so that the baby’s days are endless, as the egg had no beginning and no end. The rest of the women threw money into the baby’s boats to be dear to the money, saying each one’s wishes. Some customs required the child not to be cut until his baptism. Even his nails cut before the baptism had to be kept and thrown into the pavilion.
