Customs in Soufli

After the birth of the child, a woman makes mpogatses (sweet cream pie) and sends one to the godmother as a notice of birth, so that the godmother can prepare for the baptism. The baptism of the child takes place in the first week after the birth.

The notice to the godmother contained the following items put together on a tray by the midwife on behalf of the mother. A milk-pie, a kouloura (a round sesam cookie), a portion of food and a bottle of wine. Then the midwife goes to the godmother or the godfather, giving them the notification about the upcoming baptism.

The godparents cut a piece of the pie and of the kouloura to safe for later. Then they eat the food, the pie and the kouloura and drink the wine. To show their acceptance of the honer of being the godparents, they now fill up the plate with a portion of their own food and add the pieces of pie and kouloura to it. The wine bottle gets filled up with their own wine. Once this is done the midwife brings the now filled tray back to the parents of the child.
