The Importance of Customs for the Greeks

For the Greek culture, the Customs and Traditions are really important

The term morality means all the mental characteristics of each person. Manners are called the perceptions of a people about moral and social behavior. It is the general principles of the law, the legitimate modes of behavior of the social man that change with the change of time, which differ from place to place and reflect the current ethics of a society.

That is, morals define values, relationships, behaviors. It is the feelings, the attitudes that characterize a time (eg. the consumption trend of the modern bourgeoisie, its preference for practical solutions, such as standardized foods, its perception of marriage, etc.).

All these are a kind of rules and laws, a form of law, unwritten, that we could call it customary. But Written Law is not an arbitrary creation of the legislator, but a product of the spirit of the people. There is an agreement of morals with the requirements of the law. For example, in human transactions the laws define as law what society considers to be moral: forbidden profiteering, any act that exploits the need of another is considered void.
