Pellas

In the prefecture of Pella,

when the baby was 40 days old, the father asked the best man if he wanted to baptize the baby. To be summoned, they took a candle and a towel and went to tell him what day the baptism would be.

On the day of the baptism the best man brought two buckets of hot water to the church. The baby was coming with a relative, and that’s where the best man was taking it after giving him money. Mother didn’t go to church. At the time of the baptism, everyone threw money at the baptism font.

The best man was saying the name of the kid that nobody knew, and the kids were running to the mother to tell her. Whichever child was first, the mother gave more money than the others.

After the end of baptism the guests shoulders the best man up and shouted “worthy” and relatives, instead of favors, distributing money and crosses. The best man brought the baby home and mother knees three times and kissed his hand to get it.

When the best man left the house, he would go from the baby’s crib, kiss it and throw money at him.
